Hello all!

One of the hardest parts about writing a book is knowing where to end the story. Sometimes the end just falls naturally into place, and sometimes it feels like you could go on writing about the characters forever. And possibly the greatest compliment a reader can give a book is to say, "I didn't want it to end!"

When I wrote What A Gentleman Wants, it was not supposed to be the start of a trilogy. But I loved those characters, and somehow found myself writing David's story (What A Rogue Desires, coming out this September) and now Celia's story (coming out June 2008—no title even as of yet!). Marcus and Hannah's story feels like a long time ago to me now, but the book just came out last fall and people were writing to me. They wanted to know what happened after the end of What A Gentleman Wants. They wanted to see the real wedding. They wanted to know what kind of stepfather Marcus would be. Well, some of that is in What A Rogue Desires, but some of it just didn't belong. So I wrote a short story which takes place between the two books, part epilogue to What A Gentleman Wants and part prologue to What A Rogue Desires. You might see it turn up in various bookstores around the country in a bright blue booklets, but it's also on my website as of today—and this is your early peek at it!

My Fair Duchess

I hope you enjoy it. It was great fun to write about Marcus and Hannah again, and I plan to post more short stories as well about other characters. I'd love to hear what you think of this idea, as well as what you think of the story itself.

In other news, I'm looking forward to the huge RWA National Conference this summer in Dallas TX. On July 11, 2007, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM, over 450 romance writers will be signing books to benefit literacy, and it's open to the public. Stop by and meet Nora Roberts, J. R. Ward, and hundreds of other writers—including me!

Wishing you a warm and sunny summer,

Caroline
